Fallout Capitalism

I've been watching the Fallout series. Nicely done, engaging show. One thing that is killing me in this show is the illiterate depiction of capitalism.

Capitalism's defining mechanism is voluntary exchange between individuals. I want something from you — I'm gonna get it only if you agree to exchange with me. Simple. There's only one alternative to voluntary exchange — involuntary exchange (duh): I want something from you, so I take it by force. My own force, or with the help of a third party. Voluntary exchange = capitalism. Involuntary exchange = not capitalism.

Voluntary exchange is impossible without individual rights and private property. You know what's possible without those? Involuntary exchange. The premise of me taking your stuff by force is me not giving a damn about your rights. I cannot trade with you if you can beat the shit out of me and take my stuff, or make me labor for you.

Even if we go as far as anarcho-capitalism, the guiding principle is NAP — the non-aggression principle: I cannot use force against you except in retaliation to force. It's not out of a good heart — it's because without it there's no voluntary exchange, and so no capitalism.

"It's a fun idea. There's a lot of earning potential with the end of the world." — a "capitalist" from Fallout

No there isn't. If you reduce the productivity of the world, that means fewer things produced, which means fewer things to buy, which means your money is worth less. The wasteland isn't a market with bad manners. It's the absence of a market.

I understand the show is partly satire. But come on — have some respect for common-sense logic. What fucking nonsense.
